Meyer Lemon Margarita

Here’s a fresh and floral take on the margarita. The sweet, light flavor of Meyer lemon juice pairs perfectly with St. Germain elderflower liqueur. Use blanco (silver) tequila for a milder tequila flavor. If you prefer a tequila-forward flavor, choose aged reposado tequila.

I like to serve this margarita “up” (strained into a chilled glass), but it’s also excellent served over ice.

Meyer Lemon Margarita Recipe
1 1/2 ounces blanco or reposado tequila such as Patron or Cabo Wabo
1/2 ounce elderflower liqueur such as St. Germain
3/4 ounce fresh Meyer Lemon Juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup
Meyer lemon wheel

Add tequila, elderflower liqueur, Meyer lemon juice and simple syrup to cocktail shaker. Add ice to cocktail shaker; cover and shake vigorously. Strain into chilled glass. Garnish with lemon wheel.

Fresh Lime Margarita

I love playing around with new margarita flavors. But, sometimes a traditional margarita is just the thing. Here’s a good, basic margarita made with fresh lime juice.

Mixing up a fresh margarita is easy, so skip the mix. Make with blanco (silver) tequila for a milder flavor. If you prefer more robust tequila flavor, use reposado aged tequila. Whichever you choose, be sure to look for tequila made from 100 percent agave.

Fresh Lime Margarita Recipe
1 1/2 ounces blanco or reposado tequila such as Patron or Cabo Wabo
3/4 ounce clear orange liqueur such as Cointreau
3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
3/4 ounce simple syrup
Lime wheel

Add tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice and simple syrup to cocktail shaker. Add ice to cocktail shaker; cover and shake vigorously. Strain into chilled glass filled with fresh ice. Garnish with lime wheel.

Looking for a large batch recipe for lime margaritas? Use the cocktail ratio to scale up the drink. This margarita recipe is 2 parts tequila, 1 part orange liqueur, 1 part fresh lime juice, 1 part simple syrup. To make 8 margaritas you’ll need 12 ounces (1 1/2 cups) tequila and 6 ounces (3/4 cup) each of orange liqueur, fresh lime juice and simple syrup. Be sure to shake the cocktail with ice to chill and dilute the margarita. Serve over additional fresh ice.

How to add salt to a margarita glass: Rub the outside rim of the glass with a cut lime. Sprinkle moistened glass with coarse salt. (Or, place salt on a small shallow plate and roll moistened glass rim in salt.)

What is simple syrup? Simple syrup is 1 part granulated sugar dissolved in 1 part water.

Blood Orange Margarita

Citrus fruit is amazing this time of year. Everything from grapefruit to blood oranges are juicy and full of flavor.

It’s the perfect time to shake up some blood orange margaritas. The mix of tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh blood orange and lime juices makes a delicious drink. I like to serve this margarita “up” (strained into a chilled glass), but it’s also excellent and extra refreshing served over ice.

Blood Orange Margarita Recipe
1 1/2 ounces blanco or reposado tequila such as Patron or Cabo Wabo
1 ounce blood orange liqueur such as Thatcher’s
1 1/2 ounces fresh blood orange juice
1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup
Blood orange slice

Add tequila, orange liqueur, blood orange juice, lime juice and simple syrup to cocktail shaker. Add ice to cocktail shaker; cover and shake vigorously. Strain into chilled glass. Garnish with blood orange slice.

Makes 1 cocktail

Tip: Blood orange liqueur adds both color and orange flavor to this cocktail. I used Thatcher’s, a small batch Michigan distiller. Clear orange liqueur such as triple sec or Cointreau can be used in place of the blood orange liqueur.

What is simple syrup? Simple syrup is 1 part granulated sugar dissolved in 1 part water.
