Blood Orange Margarita

Citrus fruit is amazing this time of year. Everything from grapefruit to blood oranges are juicy and full of flavor.

It’s the perfect time to shake up some blood orange margaritas. The mix of tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh blood orange and lime juices makes a delicious drink. I like to serve this margarita “up” (strained into a chilled glass), but it’s also excellent and extra refreshing served over ice.

Blood Orange Margarita Recipe
1 1/2 ounces blanco or reposado tequila such as Patron or Cabo Wabo
1 ounce blood orange liqueur such as Thatcher’s
1 1/2 ounces fresh blood orange juice
1/2 ounce fresh lime juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup
Blood orange slice

Add tequila, orange liqueur, blood orange juice, lime juice and simple syrup to cocktail shaker. Add ice to cocktail shaker; cover and shake vigorously. Strain into chilled glass. Garnish with blood orange slice.

Makes 1 cocktail

Tip: Blood orange liqueur adds both color and orange flavor to this cocktail. I used Thatcher’s, a small batch Michigan distiller. Clear orange liqueur such as triple sec or Cointreau can be used in place of the blood orange liqueur.

What is simple syrup? Simple syrup is 1 part granulated sugar dissolved in 1 part water.
